My Book Boyfriend: Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games

Missie at the Unread Reader, has this great meme where we share our book boyfriends - you know the guys who make you swoon and come make for each time in your favourite book? I've still been spying and drooling over other people's book boyfriends for quite a few months now but having read The Hunger Games this week, I finally have a book boyfriend I want to share Peeta Mellark, the tribute from District 12. Now I know others have already picked Peeta as their book boyfriend, but lets face it, he's mine!

Now, I know with the film out next week everyone will be thinking of Josh Hutcherson in this role, but I have to confess I wasn't picturing him in the role while I was reading. I was thinking of Matthew Lewis. Yep, Neville from the Harry Potter films is all grown up and looking mighty fine! :)

What is so attractive about Peeta Mellark? It's his dedication to Katniss. He wants her to survive and will do anything to make sure she does. Even if she is not always sure why.
And then he gives me a smile that just seems so genuinely sweet with just the right touch of shyness that unexpected warmth rushes through me (The Hunger Games)

“Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to…to show the Capitol they don’t own me. That I’m more than just a piece in their Games” (The Hunger Games)

“I wish I could freeze this moment right here, right now, and live in it forever" (The Hunger Games)

Peeta would have won a suit on his victory tour I'm sure!
“Peeta, how come I never know when you're having a nightmare?” I say.
“I don't know. I don't think I cry out or thrash around or anything. I just come to, paralyzed with terror,” he says.
“You should wake me,” I say, thinking about how I can interrupt his sleep two or three times on a bad night. About how long it can take to calm me down.
“It's not necessary. My nightmares are usually about losing you,” he says. “I'm okay once I realize you're here.”    (Catching Fire)

And if all that wasn't good enough, he can bake and decorate cakes! Now that is attractive! :)

Creature Feature: Ultimate Love Triangle

Love triangles – always a popular theme from Elizabeth Bennett, Mr Rochester and Mr Wickham all the way through to Jennifer, Angelina and Brad. Recently I’ve noticed in my reading that one particular type of love triangle seems to come up a lot – the one between a girl, a werewolf and a vampire. And I’m not just talking about Twilight here (although watching the latest film in the saga did help inspire this posting – as did reading the second H+W Investigations book, Taken By The Others with Shia, Royce and Chaz). This type of triangle seems to pop up a lot in Urban Fantasy ever since Anita Blake first found herself caught between master Vampire Jean-Claude and head werewolf Richard Zeeman and is increasingly popular in paranormal YA novels. What is it about werewolves and vampires that attract our feisty heroines so? As I was pondering this, I thought I’d compile a list of pros and cons for each as boyfriend material…

Two of my favourite Vampire boyfriends!
Vampire Boyfriend

Pros
  • Long-lived and nearly immortal, so he should be there for you always
  • Usually good looking (hey, we all like a hot guy on our arms!)
  • Wealthy – long life usually means vampires have a strong property and saving portfolio (again nice to have – we all like a bit of luxury!)
  • Sexy – the vast majority of vamps are portrayed as sexy and attractive, with the ability to unleash your own deep desires
Cons
  • Night time dates only – no daytrips to the beach!
  • Cold to the touch
  • Hard to reach emotionally – all those years may leave him detached from human emotions
  • Have to be careful that a dinner date, doesn’t mean you’re the dinner!
  • Will never grow old with you
  • Never father children (Okay, that isn’t the case for Edward and Bella but I think that’s the exception rather than the rule!)

Werewolf Boyfriend

Alcide, one sexy werewolf
Pros
  • Will take clothes off a lot!
  • Protective of you and your relationship
  • Extremely masculine
  • Likes animals (sometimes for food!)
  • Daylight dates are a go…perhaps hiking in the woods…?

Cons
  • Might have to share him with a pack – could take up a lot of his time
  • May not always think before he acts (instinctive)
  • Has a temper – usually the jealous type.
  • Beware of beard burn!
  • Be unavailable for a couple of nights a month at least…

Hmm….tough choice for the girls. I’ve taken generic ideas of both vampires and werewolves here rather than limiting it to one author’s take. Generally the vampire is consider the more sophisticated option – more usually found in the city, in a suit (with or without cape). The werewolf is the more natural option found in the woods and close to nature.

Two very different options…which would you choose? Is there anything you want to add to my pros & cons list for either? J

My Book Boyfriend: Eli Monpress!

Missie at the Unread Reader, has this great meme where we share our book boyfriends - you know the guys who make you swoon and come make for each time in your favourite book? Now, I've been spying and drooling over other people's book boyfriends for quite a few months now and hoarding all my men to myself. So esepcially for Eli Monpress week, I'm introducing my first book boyfriend, the man himself - ELI MONPRESS.

Eli is a thief, actually he's the greatest thief in the world with an ever growing bounty on his head. Or as his wanted poster says when we first meet him -
Eli Monpress - bounty, paid dead or alive,
20,000 Council Gold Standard Weights.
Wanted on 157 counts of grand larceny against a noble person, 3 counts of fraud, 1 charge of counterfeiting and treason against the Rector Spiritualis

But that doesn't mean he's evil. Lord Whitehall, member of the Council describes him as
"A two-bit con man with a flair for the dramatic."

or as Miranda Lyonette says -
"Thinking he's not evil isn't the same as liking him. He's a scoundrel and a lawbreaker and a thief, not to mention a liar and though I will admit he's not a bad sort of guy underneath all that, it hardly makes up for the rest."

However, I would gladly welcome him any time. He's charming -he can talk the trees into bending over backwards for him - literally! He has great trust in his friends and partners and while he can turn most situations to suit himself, at the end of the day he does do the right thing. And who doesn't like a bad boy with a heart of gold underneath? So far there has been little romance for Eli, but I'm sure I can change that! Plus if I ever bored of him, I can always turn him in for the bounty! :-)

Today I have Brandon Routh playing Eli as I think he has the perfect combination of cheeky grin and smouldering eyes. Plus yummy!
So would you kick him out of bed? :)
