The Deadliest Bite Review

The Deadliest Bite (Jaz Parks 8)
-          Jennifer Rardin

Publisher: Orbit

E-Arc courtesy of netgalley and Orbit Books – Out now

I have two choices. Carve Brude's name into Hell's bile-encrusted gates. Or lose my soul. After an assassination attempt on Vayl, I find myself pulled into a tangled web that takes the gang to Romania. So how will I save a ghost, rescue a demon, and cheat the Great Taker out of a soul he's slavering for while defeating my nastiest foe yet so that Vayl can, at last, cherish a few precious years with his sons? With careful planning, major violence, and one (hopefully) final trip to Hell.

This is the last book in the Jaz Parks series and sadly the last book by Jennifer Rardin who died last year. Fortunately, she managed to tie up most of the loose ends in the Jaz’s world and this book is a very satisfying final meal. This book is definitely one for fans – I’m not sure it makes much sense if you haven’t read the previous books – but that does mean you have the joy of meeting Jaz and exploring her world starting with Once Bitten, Twice Shy.

Jaz as usual, has a lot on her plate. She has to figure out how to separate the mystical hammer and chisel which is the only way to evict and unwanted demon from her head. Vayl’s long awaited reunion with his sons is immediate…and if they don’t kill each other, they might loose their own souls. So, it’s pretty much business as usual. Luckily she has help in the form of her former crush, her twin brother, a psychic, her genius college roommate, her pets and of course her vampire lover, Vayl. I don’t want to say too much but this has all the haul marks of a classic Jaz Parks adventure. There is little that is surplus with every accomplishment and conversation adding to the tension and moving the characters and plot forward.

The action is non-stop and makes your heart leap into your throat. At the same time characters aren’t forgotten and it’s great to see how far all the characters have come since we first met them. This series has been a breath of fresh air in the Urban Fantasy genre with explosive set pieces and some real heart – despite our main characters being CIA assassins and I’ll miss Jaz, Vayl and the gang.

My Book Haul/ In My Mailbox

The Story Siren hosts a weekly meme where bloggers can share what goodies they've purchased/received this week. If you get a chance head over to The Story Siren and check out what everyone is up to!

For the second week in a row I've had a bumper selection of books arrive thanks mostly to competition win and some fabulous friends. In fact I've been dancing round the room a lot this week and trying to figure out how I can read all these yummy books as soon as possible! :-)

Enclave - Ann Aguirre
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.
As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.

I've just finished Shady Lady by Ann Aguirre and loved it (review & giveaway here) so I wanted to try some of her other books including Enclave which has been gaining some very positive remarks. Knowing I was feeling down, my lovely, lovely friend Karen got me this to cheer me up - and it worked! You're the best!

The next few books I won as part of the All Male Genre Review hosted by Missie at The Unread Reader and Logan E Turner - I was lucky enough to win the international pack! This included $15 from Book depository which got put to good use with the following -

Hounded - Kevin Hearne
Publisher: Del Ray
Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old—when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer. Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power—plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a sexy bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish—to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.

My Soul to Keep - Rachel Vincent
Publisher: UK - MIRA Books
When teenager Kaylee screams, someone dies. And Kaylee's about to scream her head off... A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them. Until something does. Demon breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends one of whom is already hooked. But so is someone else. Nash.

The prize also included 4 ebooks which are mostly books I don't think I would have looked at otherwise but I like the sound of these!
Ethereal Messeanger - Scott Nicholson
An omnibus edition of three supernatural novels by bestselling author Scott Nicholson.
THE RED CHURCH: A young boy and a sheriff must solve the mystery of a haunted Appalachian church after a strange preacher returns to town. A 2002 Stoker Award finalist.
DRUMMER BOY: One misfit kid is all that stands between a mountain town and a chilling supernatural force when the past and the present collide.
SPEED DATING WITH THE DEAD: A paranormal conference at the Blue Ridge Mountain's most haunted hotel goes haywire when ghost hunters accidentally stir up demons
.

Shades of Atlantis - Carol Oates
Since the death of their parents, Triona Pryor and her brother, Ben, have lived with their aunt and uncle in Camden, Maine. Now in her senior year of high school, Triona loves her family and friends, but she has always felt that she didn't quite fit in...in Camden, or anywhere else. Enter Caleb Wallace, the devilishly handsome man who has recently moved to Triona's small town. While their attraction to each other is instantaneous, it also proves to be dangerous...and deadly. When tragedy strikes, Triona flees to London for solace and to start her life anew. It's there she discovers from an unlikely source that her family has been keeping secrets from her - secrets about not only her birthright, but her ultimate destiny as well. Armed with this knowledge, Triona finds herself thrown into a whole new world and into a battle to save the lives of everyone she loves.

Life, Liberty and Pursuit - Susan Kaye Quinn
When college-bound Eliza falls into a cruise-ship pool, she doesn’t expect to fall in love. And when navy recruit David pulls her from the water, he finds her surprisingly hard to resist. But a whirlwind of rescues, candlelit nights, and beachside misunderstandings pulls them into a four-day love affair that threatens to break their hearts before their love has a chance to start. When David leaves for endless drills and physical training in boot camp, and Eliza returns to Albuquerque to prepare for Princeton in the fall, they dare to keep loving each other and struggle to imagine a future when they can be together. But when miles and mistrust pull them apart, they are forced to choose between keeping true to their dreams and having the courage to love.

Breaking Point - Jess Bowen
Phoebe Johnson and Ethan Smith had everything they needed: loving parents, great friends, and admission letters to Ivy League schools they’d be heading to in the fall. If only they knew that they were never going to reach the end of that summer--at least, not in the world they knew. A secret waits to be revealed on the eve of their nineteenth birthday, a secret that is going to change their lives forever when it leads them to a place they never believed existed, love they could never imagine living without, and power they never suspected they possessed.

Iron Crowned - Richelle Mead
Publisher: UK - Bantam
Shaman-for-hire Eugenie Markham is the best at banishing entities trespassing in the mortal realm. But as the Thorn Land’s queen, she’s fast running out of ways to end the brutal war devastating her kingdom. Her only hope: the Iron Crown, a legendary object even the most powerful fear…
But who can she trust to help her? Fairy king Dorian has his own agenda. And Kiyo, her shape-shifter ex-boyfriend, has every reason to betray her. To control the Crown’s all-consuming powers, Eugenie must confront an unimaginable temptation – one which puts her soul and the fate of two worlds in mortal danger…

And finally, I've been waiting for this for ages, but sadly the first copy I bought got lost in the post :-( Happily the replacement book arrived this week!

So what books have you picked up this week?

On My Wishlist #43

This is a meme from Book Chick City. There are so many books out there that I want to read that this is the only way I can keep track! This week I feel the end is coming...apocalypse time!
Nightfall - Ellen Connor
Publisher: Berkley
Growing up with an unstable, often absent father who preached about the end of the world, Jenna never thought in her wildest nightmares that his predictions would come true. Or that he would have a plan in place to save her-one that includes the strong, stoic man who kidnaps and takes her to a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest.
The mysterious ex-Marine named Mason owes a life-debt to Jenna’s father. Skilled and steadfast, he’s ready for the prophesied Change, but Jenna proves tough to convince. Until the power grid collapses and mutant dogs attack-vicious things that reek of nature gone wrong. When five strangers appear, desperate to escape the bloodthirsty packs, Jenna defies her protector and rescues them. As technology fails and the old world falls away, Jenna changes too, forever altered by supernatural forces. To fight for their future, she and Mason must learn to trust their instinctive passion-a flame that will see them through the bitter winter, the endless nights, and the violence of a new Dark Age.

Ellen Connor is actually two people - Ann Aguirre and Carrie Lofty and I have to confess I love Ann Aguirre's writing. That's enough to get me interested but add to that the story line and the fairly hunky man on the front and I'm there! :)

Robopocalypse - Daniel H. Wilson
Publisher: Simon & Schuster

Roughly twenty years from now, our technological marvels unite and turn against us. A childlike but massively powerful artificial intelligence known as Archos comes online...and kills the man who created it. This first act of betrayal leads Archos to gain control over the global network of machines and technology that regulates everything from transportation to utilities, defense, and communications. In the early months, sporadic glitches are noticed by a handful of unconnected humans - from a senator and single mother disconcerted by her daughter's "smart" toys, to a lonely Japanese bachelor, to an isolated U.S. soldier - but most are unaware of the growing rebellion until it is far too late. Then, in the span of minutes, at a moment known later in history as Zero Hour, every mechanical device in our world rebels, setting off the Robot War that both decimates and - for the first time in history - unites humankind.

This is another cool looking book which has been gaining positive reviews. If like me, you've always been slightly wary of the Terminator vision of the future, this may the book for you!

The First Days - Rhiannon Frater
Publisher: Tor Books
The morning that the world ends, Katie is getting ready for court and housewife Jenni is taking care of her family. Less than two hours later, they are fleeing for their lives from a zombie horde.  Thrown together by circumstance, Jenni and Katie become a powerful zombie-killing partnership, mowing down zombies as they rescue Jenni’s stepson, Jason, from an infected campground. They find sanctuary in a tiny, roughly fortified Texas town.  There Jenni and Katie find they are both attracted to Travis, leader of the survivors; and the refugees must slaughter people they know, who have returned in zombie form.

You can't have a list of apocalypse books without there being at least one zombie book! I like the idea of having two women as the main characters in a zombie plague as well.

So what are you wishing for this week?

White Cat Review

White Cat (Curse Workers 1)
-          Holly Black

Publisher: Gollancz

Cassel is cursed. Cursed by the memory of the fourteen year old girl he murdered. Life at school is a constant trial. Life at home even worse. No-one at home is ever going to forget that Cassel is a killer. No-one at home is ever going to forget that he isn't a magic worker. Cassel's family are one of the big five crime families in America. Ever since magic was prohibited in 1929 magic workers have been driven underground and into crime. And while people still need their touch, their curses, their magical killings, their transformations, times have been hard. His granddad has been driven to drink, his mother is in prison and his brothers detest him as the only one of their family who can't do magic. But there is a secret at the centre of Cassel's family and he's about to inherit it. It's terrifying and that's the truth.

I will admit that it took me a while to get into this book. Set in a world where 1% of the population can work magic or ‘curse’ by touching bare skin, Cassel is an oddity in his family being the only non-worker. Cassel’s family work for a major crime boss with most of them workers of some description. As the baby of the family and only non-worker, he feels very much on the outside looking in. As this is all told in first person and he already knows how his world operates, it takes a while before the reader is up the speed on what this all means in terms of having to wear gloves and how much the general population is scared of workers. However, after the first three chapters I suddenly ‘got it’ and was able to relax and enjoy the ride.

This is part mystery, part romance, part magical adventure with a taste of coming of age thrown in. There is an intriguing new system of magic to learn where workers can manipulate dreams, change memories or influence luck, but there is a price to pay for each working so none of it is consequence free. As Cassel struggles to discover the secrets his family hides and come to terms with his own past, we are given insight into a conflicted teenager, who feels like an outsider both at home and at school. Something that most teens feel at some point and makes Cassel relatable. I loved his complex relationships both with his family and his friends and how they change as the story progresses. I also enjoyed the level of wit in the story. It’s not too snarky but feels believable without being over the top. Well written and captivating, this was a great distraction from everyday life!

Recommended for fans of Neil Gaiman and Richelle Mead. 8 out of 10.

Throwback Thursday #12 - The Iron Duke

This is a great feature that Melissa at My World...in words and pictures has been doing for a while and I wanted to jump on board! There are plenty of books out there I desperately want...

But what about all those wonderful books that are ALREADY on my shelves?

The Iron Duke - Meljean Brook

After the Iron Duke freed England from Horde control, he instantly became a national hero. Now Rhys Trahaearn has built a merchant empire on the power -and fear - of his name. And when a dead body is dropped from an airship onto his doorstep, bringing Detective Inspector Mina Wentworth into his dangerous world, he intends to make her his next possession. But when Mina uncovers the victim's identity, she stumbles upon a conspiracy that threatens the lives of everyone in England.

I received this as a birthday present last year because I read so many good reviews and loved the sound of it. And yet, I still haven't read it. Since I received it, I've read more Steampunk than I had before and really enjoy the Victorian-esque inventions and who doesn't like a little conspiracy? Right, I think I've talked myself into picking this up soon! :-)

What have you got on your shelves you haven't read yet?
