This week my theme is a little unusual...I'm putting up three very different books by the same author. I adore Carrie Vaughn's Kitty series and can't wait to read some different books by her!
Voices of Dragons - Carrie Vaughn
Publisher: US - Harper Teen (March 2010)
In an alternate 21st century, teens have cell phones and cars, and worry about who will take them to homecoming and whether or not to have sex. They also have dragon drills—just in case the creatures cross the border and attack. After World War II, the dragons, who had been in hiding for centuries, reemerged from myth into real life. Humans, still on edge from the trauma of the war, struck out at them, causing a conflict in which many on both sides died. A truce was reached, a border was created, and a tentative peace was established. Seventeen-year-old Kay lives on the border of Dragon. After a fall during an ill-advised solo climb, she is rescued by Artegal, a dragon who is studying human language. Over the next weeks, a tentative friendship grows into a bond between them. When the border is breached and a conflict begins, they must rely on their friendship to repair the damage before too many lives are lost.
This is Carrie Vaughn's first YA novel. So many of my favourite authors are also doing YA series and I can't wait to read this - after all who doesn't like Dragons? :)
Discords Apple - Carrie Vaughn
Publisher: US - Tor (July 2010)
Evie Walker is a comic book writer who leaves behind a strife-filled Los Angeles to care for her dying father in the smalltown of Hopes Fort, Colo. Evie soon inherits the responsibility of guarding a magical storeroom and its contents as the country becomes hyperdefensive about possible terrorist threats.
This story sounds great with a magical storeroom and some hints about the Trojan War. Plus it's very different from the Kitty series!
After The Golden Age - Carrie Vaughn
Publisher: US - Tor (April 2011)
Can an accountant defeat a supervillain? Celia West, only daughter of the heroic leaders of the superpowered Olympiad, has spent the past few years estranged from her parents and their high-powered lifestyle. She’s had enough of masks and heroics, and wants only to live her own quiet life out from under the shadow of West Plaza and her rich and famous parents.
Then she is called into her boss’ office and told that as the city’s top forensic accountant, Celia is the best chance the prosecution has to catch notorious supervillain the Destructor for tax fraud. In the course of the trial, Celia’s troubled past comes to light and family secrets are revealed as the rift between Celia and her parents grows deeper. Cut off from friends and family, Celia must come to terms with the fact that she might just be Commerce City’s only hope.

There are few books about superheros out there and this looks like an different twist on the usual theme.
