Same Book/Different Cover: Moon Called

This is an occasional feature I'm introducing comparing different covers of the same book...what I'm particularly interested in are re-issued covers for the same book.

This week I'm looking at one of my favourite series - Mercy Thompson starting with Moon Called by Patricia Briggs...

Original US Cover - 2006

Original UK Cover - 2008
New UK Cover - 2011
Personally I'm not a fan of the original US cover - it put me off for a long time originally as I don't really like models on my book covers (I'm coming to appreciate sometimes they're okay but I much prefer something symbolic or patterned). My favourite is the original UK cover because the girl is mostly in shadow and I love the silhouette style of the grave yard. The totem styling of the new UK cover is cool but I don't really get the Tron style electric blue at the bottom...

Which cover do you prefer?

  1. I like the US cover even if Mercy would never dress like that

  2. As Blodeuedd says Mercy would never dress like that and she doesn't have nearly as much tattoos but the US cover is still my favourite. It's sort of like some illustrated covers on books that don't seem all that remarkable until you actually read the story and then you notice all the details. Like in the US cover the cover model's tattoos changes with each book and you can tell from the tattoos what the stories main focus is going to be. For Moon Called it was wolves and for Blood Bound it was vampires, sure the titles may give it away but the tattoos offer a visual and I thought that was neat that they put in the effort to offer that much detail.

I do enjoy silhouettes on covers as well though and the original UK cover would be my second favourite here, its definitely better than the new UK cover. The text on the new cover doesn't fit together or work at all imo.

And nice feature. Not Your Fairy Tail does something very similar.

  3. All of them fail me, but if I had to pick, I'd go with the U.S. cover.

  4. US! I'm a big fan of Daniel Dos Santos, the cover artist of the US cover and have even bought books just because he made the cover.

  5. As Sandy says the tattoos tell the story on the inside. That is why they change. So, there is your symbolism. :) I'm a Dan Dos Santos fan so I'm going with the US cover. :)

  6. Hate the US cover, LOVE the original UK cover! The newer one is fine, but the original is gorgeous!
