Twice Bitten Review

Twice Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires 3)
-       Chloe Neill
Publisher: UK – Gollancz
Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master Vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit, Chicago's newest vampire. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene-and to spy for the vamps while she's at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan's offering some steamy, one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission. Unfortunately, someone is gunning for Gabriel, and Merit soon finds herself in the line of fire. She'll need all the help she can get to track down the would-be assassin, but everywhere she turns, there are rising tensions between supernaturals-not least between her and a certain green-eyed, centuries-old master vampire.
Why have I waited so long before reading this book? Because I’m a fool! Although I’ve had Twice Bitten since it was released in the UK, I’ve only just got round to reading it. And I had a fantastic time catching up with Merit, Ethan and the rest of the Cardoc house vampires. The shapeshifters are in town for a conference to decide whether to withdraw from the human world or stay and face the challenges alongside the vampires.
This time round I fell straight into writing which subtle merges Merits emotional journey and her coming to terms with her new life as a vampire Sentinel as well as her attraction for her house master, Ethan. Add the action of fighting shapeshifters and you have a wonderfully emotional and exciting story. Merit is a heroine you can root for. I loved that she and Ethan moved their relationship forward – even if he then screws things up. Why can’t UF heroine have happy straight forward relationships? Beside the emotional side, there is plenty of snarky banter between characters which I always enjoy. The action is fairly straight forward but exciting and I found I couldn’t read the pages fast enough.
The expansion of the world with the shapeshifters final decision means that the world will change around Merit and I can’t wait to read Hard Bitten to see what happens now! Luckily I have Hard Bitten waiting to be read! J

  3. Personally, I LOVED Book 5, but you have to be able to trust Neill when you read it. I'm about 1/2way through 6 now and am still sane and happy, so all is good so far.
