My Book Haul/In My Mailbox

The Story Siren hosts a weekly meme where bloggers can share what goodies they've purchased/received this week. If you get a chance head over to The Story Siren and check out what everyone is up to!

A Touch of Dead - Charlaine Harris
Publisher: Gollancz
Sookie Stackhouse enjoys her job as a cocktail waitress in Merlotte's, a small-town bar in small-town Bon Temps, deep in Louisiana. She's funny and pretty and, thanks to her grandmother, she's very well-mannered - but since not many people truly appreciate her ability to read their minds, the guys haven't exactly been beating down her door . . . And then along came Bill, tall, dark and handsome - and Sookie couldn't 'hear' a word he was thinking. He was exactly the type of guy she'd been waiting all her life for. Of course, Bill had a disability of his own: fussy about his food, not into suntans, bit of a night person: yep, Bill was a vampire. But at least now Sookie knows there *are* guys she can date who won't worry about her catching them thinking about other women . . . And that's going to make Sookie's life really interesting!

A book of short stories about Sookie...I've read a couple before which is why I haven't pick it up before now. However, I came across this is a reduced offer and thought it would complete my collection!

Changes - Jim Butcher
Publisher: UK - Orbit
Meet Harry Dresden, Chicago’s first (and only) Wizard P.I. Turns out the ‘everyday’ world is full of strange and magical things – and most of them don’t play well with humans. That’s where Harry comes in.
But even a career of narrow escapes and supernatural shenanigans hasn’t prepared Harry for this. A vampire with a grudge has kidnapped his daughter. A daughter he never knew he had. Furthermore, this vampire plans to use her blood in a violent ritual sacrifice – designed to kill Harry, his ex-partner Susan and their child.
As allies are perilously thin on the ground, Harry must find a new source of strength. In the past, there had always been a line he wouldn’t cross, and he’s never given in to the full fury of his own untapped dark powers. But then, only his own life was at stake.
Magic – it can get a guy killed.

Harry Dresden is one of my favourite series - and doesn't seem to running out of ideas yet! So I had this pre-ordered ages ago but it was late being delivered so it only arrived this week. :-( I also have a slight rant about changing the style of covers for the UK as well as the size of the book - it will look out of place next to my other Dresden files! However, I can't wait to start reading it but I'm thinking of leaving it for a while so I can continue to enjoy the anticipation...

River Marked - Patricia Briggs
Publisher: UK - Orbit
Car mechanic Mercy Thompson has always known there was something different about her, and not just the way she can make a VW engine sit up and beg. Mercy is a shapeshifter, a talent she inherited from her long-gone father. And she’s never known any others of her kind. Until now.
As Mercy comes to terms with this new information, an evil is stirring in the depths of the Columbia River. Something deadly is coming, facts are thin on the ground and Mercy feels ill at ease. However, her father’s people may know more. To have any hope of surviving, Mercy and her mate, the Alpha werewolf Adam, will need all the resources the shifters can offer. Or death will be the least of their worries.

Another favourite series of mine that is automatically on the pre-prder list! I love Mercy and Adam's relationship and can't wait to see how it evolves now. :-)

Sacrifice - S.J. Bolton
Publisher: UK - Corgi
Moving to remote Shetland has been unsettling enough for consultant surgeon Tora Hamilton, even before the gruesome discovery she makes one rain-drenched afternoon . . .

Deep in the peat soil of her field she uncovers the body of a young woman. Her heart has been removed, and the marks etched into the woman’s skin bear an eerie resemblance to carvings Tora has seen in her own cellar.

But as Tora begins to ask questions, terrifying threats start rolling in like the cold island mists . . .

This is the final book I've received as part of the Transworld Crime Caper. I've been really enjoying trying some different types of books. And can I say, how gorgeous is this cover? It's so spooky - I love it!

And finally,  a few giveaway wins came through this week - first up I won an audio book of one of favourite books from Nicole Peeler and the lovely, lovely Melissa at My World... in Words and Pages. I can't wait to spend some time listening to Jane's adventures!

Tempest Rising - Nicole Peeler
Living in small town Rockabill, Maine, Jane True always knew she didn't quite fit in with so-called normal society. During her nightly, clandestine swim in the freezing winter ocean, a grisly find leads Jane to startling revelations about her heritage: she is only half-human. Now, Jane must enter a world filled with supernatural creatures that are terrifying, beautiful and deadly - all of which perfectly describe her new 'friend' Ryu, a gorgeous and powerful vampire. It is a world where nothing can be taken for granted: a dog can heal with a lick; spirits bag your groceries; and whatever you do, never - ever - rub the genie's lamp.

Then the brave and lovely Jackie from Housewife Blues and Chihuhua Tales sent me this as a thanks for winning her comments competition in February - I've been after this for a long time - esepcially since won the sequel Hellforged a couple of weeks ago!

Deadtown - Nancy Holzner
Publisher: US - Ace
They call it Deadtown: the city's quarantined section for its inhuman and undead residents. Most humans stay far from its borders - but Victory Vaughn, Boston's only professional demon slayer, isn't exactly human.

So that's what I've picked up in a very lucky week - what have you received? :)

  3. Mel! Cool U.K. covers! I really like seeing the difference form the US covers. I'm a huge SVM fan so I enjoyed the short stories in AToD. And I've been meaning to read the Dresden files forever now. *sighs*

  5. Oh, so jealous! I can't wait to read River Marked - not sure how I feel about the UK cover though, I might try Forbidden Planet to see if I can get the US version so it matches the rest of the series.
I got Tempest Rising as an audiobook for Christmas, and I've spent this weekend listening to books 2 & 3 - I love this series, and it makes me laugh so much. Hope you enjoy it too.
I've seen Deadtown around for a while, but I don't really know what it's about - looking forward to your review if you do one.
